sound Analysis
When it comes to sound, there has to be a contrast between what you're seeing and what you are hearing, this is because it confuses the brain if you use a contrast of sounds. Music and sound effects in a horror film are very unique. If whatever is on the screen is frightening and unsettling, a noise that would be used for something vulnerable and small would be used to confuse the audience. For example, a child nursery tune is used to soothe and calm babies to sleep, therefore it is known as a good, safe noise. When it is used in a horror film, it usually means that the main protagonist is in danger. This sound technique is used very well in the horror film "Woman In Black" in the nursery scene. This will confuse the human brain into thinking that they are safe when in actual fact they are about to die.
As well as scary child nursery rhymes, horror noises are also made by low woodwind noises. This would include instruments like, piccolo, english horn and the oboe. These instruments can create unstable wave forms which are really unsettling when watching a horror film. A common example to use is a low drone noise which is most effective when something large is approaching in the scene.
As low strings are suitable for building suspense before something big happens in a scene, high strings are often used to create an eerie, tense atmosphere. The use of high stings gradually builds a climax until you hit the main scare in the scene. Jump scares are the main part of the horror film that people wait and look out for, however when the do appear , the viewers cant really handle them
