opening sequence Analysis
The opening title sequence starts off with three girls having a tea party with the music of an old fashioned music box in the background, the eerie music gives us an immediate sense of vulnerability as the children are innocently playing with toys. However when they witness the woman in black's presence in the corner out of shot, they are immediately focused on the window at the other side of the room. The woman being out of shot gives us a sense of insecurity as we have no idea what they are looking at. this then leads to the unfortunate death of the three girls as they jump out of the window , followed by the scream of a devastated mother.the shot then zooms out for us to see the woman in a black dress in the corner of the room.
This is the opening scene of 'The Conjuring 2', in this scene we see the landing and the stairs in the daylight and the atmosphere seems quite innocent and not like anything bad is going to happen. Then we see the same stair set and landing but there is limited lighting and lots of shadows; this makes the atmosphere now more scary and eerie so this may put some of the audience on edge. Also when the women is at the top of the stairs, a high angle is used which could show that the women is vulnerable at this stage because a high angle means that the character has less power as she is being looked down on. This makes the audience feel tense as the women is in a dark landing and the high angle makes her look vulnerable so as the door slowly opens this makes the audience feel like something is going to happen.
The opening sequence starts of pitch black, with a phone ringing in the background giving you an immediate sense of insecurity and vulnerability, and then a scream and a gun shot this makes us anxious as we do not know what has just happened as its a pitch black screen as the title of the film. The film then starts with a girl answering the phone with a mysterious man on the end, this makes you feel apprehensive because we do not know who the man is and what he wants. he then continues to ring back this makes us feel a lot more nervous for the girl as she could be in danger. The popcorn is a symbol because as the popcorn gets bigger and bigger the man starts to get infuriated as she keeps hanging up, this again makes us feel sorry for the girl as she is being harassed by a complete stranger.
The scene starts off with organ music in the background which gives the scene an immediate sense of nervousness. The scene seems a lot more realistic with the use of the POV hand held camera and the speaking in the background. The use of the noose around the mans neck even though it is in a play makes the audience feels nervous for the character due to the risk of injury. Then during the end of the scene the floor from underneath the man falls and he is hanged by accident, to make this moment even more scarier the use of loud sudden hitting of a drum sound to make the audience jump at the end of the scene the #gallows is shown at the end giving the audience an easy way of connecting to the film and expressing there likes and dislikes from the opening sequence letting the director see where he can improve in the film.
